New Executives Appointed to Key Leadership Roles

Wise has announced changes to its executive leadership team aimed at strengthening its core infrastructure, enhancing service processes, and ensuring a secure and robust operating environment for its customers. Áki Barkarson has been appointed Chief Information Officer (CIO), leading Operational Services and IT, and Benedikt Rúnarsson has been hired as Wise’s new Security Officer.

Áki Barkarson joined Wise in 2023 as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Prior to joining Wise, he worked at Advania for 16 years, most recently as Head of Operations Solutions and previously as Chief Process Officer (CPO). Since joining Wise, Áki has led several improvement initiatives focused on strengthening infrastructure, simplifying workflows, and implementing solutions that support better service delivery and continued company growth. In his new role, he will be responsible for the development and execution of Wise’s operational services strategy.

Benedikt Rúnarsson joins Wise from Míla, where he served as Head of Security and Quality. He brings extensive experience in security management, implementation, and oversight, with a strong background in IT security and digital infrastructure development. Benedikt has led numerous projects focused on risk management and building stronger security environments. He has completed specialized training in process management at Boston University and Duke University, Lean methodology at Reykjavik University, and various information security certifications.

Benedikt’s appointment is a strategic step in Wise’s ongoing investment in security and cloud services, reinforcing the company’s commitment to providing a secure and trustworthy operational environment for its clients. He will lead the continued development of Wise’s security strategy and work across teams to enhance the company’s products and services in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
